The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over reports of students taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) around midnight in some parts of Nigeria.

Allegations: 👨‍⚖

• Midnight Exams: Students were reportedly made to sit for exams as late as midnight in some centers.

• Gross Failure of Responsibility: The Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, Hon. Oboku Oforji, described the development as a "gross failure of responsibility" and a reckless compromise of the psychological well-being and safety of Nigerian student.

Committee's Response:🗣️

The committee summoned WAEC's leadership to explain the irregular exam schedules. However, the Head of WAEC's National Office was absent, and the Council was represented by Senior Assistant Registrar and Zonal Coordinator, Ambrose Okelezo.

Lawmakers' Outrage: 👨‍⚖

Lawmakers expressed outrage over WAEC's handling of the matter, describing it as "shocking" and "inhumane." Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante (PDP–Rivers) and Hon. Billy Osawaru (PDP–Edo) demanded full accountability and described the situation as a "systemic failure, bordering on negligence."

The committee has adjourned the hearing until Monday, June 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., and has warned WAEC that any further attempts to evade accountability will not be tolerated. The Chairman emphasized that parents and Nigerian children deserve answers and better treatment.
