According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike. The Commissioner of Police stated that the command is committed to maintaining law and order and will ensure that all parties operate within the confines of the law. ASUU-IMSU had embarked on strike to press home demands including payment of arrears, improved funding, and implementation of agreements with the state government. In a directive issued after deliberations by the National Executive Council [NEC], ASUU stated that the decision became necessary due to the continued non-implementation of key provisions of the agreement relating to funding, revitalisation of universities, earned academic allowances, and welfare of academic staff. As a result, academic activities in the affected 20 universities have been disrupted with immediate effect.
