Education stakeholders are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately cancel the newly introduced N4,000 WAEC verification fee, describing it as an unfair burden on Nigerian students and families.
The fee, recently implemented by the West African Examinations Council, has been condemned as an "assault on education" at a time when students are already grappling with rising costs of learning materials, registration, and other levies.
"This new N4,000 WAEC verification fee is exploitative and places an additional financial strain on students and parents," a statement from education advocates read. "At a time when access to quality and affordable education should be a priority, imposing such charges contradicts the government’s commitment to educational development."
The group urged President Tinubu to intervene without delay and direct WAEC to withdraw the fee, noting that education remains the foundation for national growth and should not be made inaccessible through excessive charges.
They further called on the Federal Ministry of Education and relevant agencies to ensure that no student is denied verification or certification due to inability to pay.
