The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police have successfully dismantled a notorious cybercrime syndicate responsible for hacking the 2025 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Computer-Based Test (CBT) results. Twenty suspects have been arrested in Abuja, with expectations of more arrests to follow.
According to security insiders, the syndicate comprises over 100 cybercriminals who infiltrated the servers of major exam bodies, including JAMB and NECO, across Nigeria. The suspects have confessed to orchestrating a plot to rig exam scores for wealthy candidates and sabotage the CBT system, causing widespread confusion and mass failure.
The gang's modus operandi involved installing malicious software on exam hardware at targeted CBT centers, enabling remote control of JAMB's servers and manipulating exam platforms to distort questions and answers. They also used rogue routers near CBT centers to override official systems, providing real-time answers to candidates who paid bribes ranging from ₦700,000 to ₦2 million.
The suspects' actions resulted in thousands of unsuspecting students facing unfair failure, while the syndicate raked in millions. Arrests have been made in multiple states, including Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Kano, and Delta.
The DSS has been monitoring the situation for months, leading to this dramatic crackdown that exposes one of the most significant attacks on Nigeria's education system to date. The authorities are keeping the suspects' names under wraps ahead of imminent court charges.
