The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has a new president, Professor Chris Piwuna, a renowned psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos. Piwuna won the election, defeating Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. He succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

Piwuna's inauguration comes amid concerns about potential industrial action due to disputes over the distribution of allowances released by the Federal Government and ongoing brain drain issues in Nigerian universities.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike. The Commissioner of Police stated that the command is committed to maintaining law and order and will ensure that all parties operate within the confines of the law. ASUU-IMSU had embarked on strike to press home demands including payment of arrears, improved funding, and implementation of agreements with the state government.
