The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has challenged Nigeria's political class to study and emulate its leadership election process, which it describes as transparent. Speaking to journalists, ASUU's Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Timothy Namo, highlighted the union's rigorous process for selecting leaders, which involves demonstrating leadership skills and making sacrifices for the union.

Namo contrasted this with the country's electoral system, which he claimed allows individuals to become leaders based on wealth rather than merit. He emphasized that ASUU's leadership process ensures that only those with a proven track record of service and commitment to the union can emerge as leaders.

The union's newly elected President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, faces significant challenges, including unresolved issues from the 2022 strike and a difficult economic environment. Namo urged the government to listen to the union's concerns and address the problems affecting the university system.

Prof. Jurbe Mwolwus, Chairperson of the University of Jos Branch of ASUU, welcomed Piwuna's appointment, praising his honesty, fearlessness, and emotional intelligence. Mwolwus expressed confidence that Piwuna would consolidate the union's gains and achieve positive results.
