The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action if the Federal Government fails to implement the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement. The union's President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, made this known at a press conference in Abuja, expressing frustration over the government's continued neglect of the education sector.

Dr. Piwuna highlighted nine unresolved issues, including the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, withheld salaries of lecturers from the 2022 strike period, and problems with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). He criticized the government's failure to release revitalization funds and earned academic allowances, noting that previous promises have not been honored.

The ASUU President also raised concerns about the marginalization and victimization of union members in certain state-owned universities, particularly in Kogi State University and Lagos State University. The union's patience is wearing thin, and it is demanding immediate action from the government to address these issues.

If the government fails to act, ASUU is prepared to take drastic measures, including a nationwide strike, which would disrupt the academic calendar and have far-reaching consequences for the education sector.
