JUST IN 🔥🔥 ASUU URGES APPOINTMENT OF PERMANENT VC FOR OJUKWU UNIVERSITY.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has called for the urgent appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor for the institution. The union made this demand during its congress held on May 16, 2025, citing concerns about the leadership vacuum created by the absence of a permanent Vice-Chancellor, which threatens the peace and stability of the university.
The union noted that similar crises in other universities in the South-East have resulted from delays in appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor, leading to confusion and rivalry. ASUU also raised concerns about prolonged acting tenures in key positions, including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Acting Bursar, and Acting University Librarian, which contradicts existing university regulations.
The congress unanimously passed a motion to formally communicate its resolution on the Vice-Chancellor issue to the University Governing Council and the Visitor. The union insisted that the ongoing appointment process should be concluded urgently and in full compliance with COOU's governing laws.
In addition to the Vice-Chancellor issue, the union commended the Anambra State Government's infrastructural interventions, including efforts to restore electricity, provide power, and construct roads within the university campuses. They also recognized the government's financial support, which contributed to the university's recent full accreditation of major programs.
However, ASUU expressed concerns about staff welfare, citing unresolved issues such as wage awards, earned academic allowances, pensions, and health insurance. The union established several committees to tackle these challenges and prepare reports for presentation to the University Governing Council and the governor.
The union's chairman, Comrade Bruno, emphasized the need for a substantive Vice-Chancellor, noting that the university has operated under acting leadership since the exit of Prof. Greg Nwakoby in December 2023. ASUU pleaded with the Anambra State Government to appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor to provide stability and leadership to the institution.
