The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has postponed an emergency meeting with vice chancellors of public universities to discuss issues surrounding the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The meeting, initially set for May 6, 2025, aimed to address allegations of unauthorized deductions from student loans.

Reasons for Postponement
Although no official reason was given for the cancellation, speculation suggests it might be due to conflicting schedules or the minister's other obligations. A source close to the matter stated that the meeting would be rescheduled once the minister's obligations are cleared

Background
The decision to convene the meeting followed reports of financial malpractices in the student loan scheme, including unauthorized deductions and double institutional fees by tertiary institutions. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had also initiated an investigation into alleged irregularities 

Minister's Stance
Minister Alausa emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the education sector, vowing to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure full accountability. The Ministry's spokesperson, Beriowo Folasade, confirmed the postponement, assuring that a new date would be announced in due course

Concerns from Stakeholders
Stakeholders, including students and education advocates, have expressed concerns over the allegations, stressing the need for urgent action to protect the interests of student loan beneficiaries. Some have questioned the government's commitment to transparency and accountability in the NELFUND scheme.
