The Federal Government has established a committee to review and reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. The goal is to strengthen the program, make it more relevant to national development, and better aligned with the needs of Nigerian youths.

Background
The NYSC has been a cornerstone of national unity and youth development since its inception in 1973. However, concerns have been raised about the safety of corps members, inadequate facilities, and the scheme's relevance in today's socio-economic context.

Committee's Mandate
The committee will review current NYSC policies, engage with stakeholders nationwide, and recommend changes to laws, policies, and operational frameworks. Specifically, the committee will:

- Investigate ways to improve the safety and well-being of corps members
- Explore innovative approaches to enhance the scheme's impact and creativity
- Develop strategies to better align the NYSC with national development objectives
- Identify potential funding sources and propose mechanisms for tracking progress and improving the scheme

New Initiatives
The Federal Government plans to launch two new initiatives:

- A Teachers' Corps for NCE graduates willing to serve in rural areas, aiming to bridge educational gaps and provide a pathway to government employment
- A Medical Corps for healthcare professionals willing to serve in underserved areas, focusing on strengthening healthcare delivery and addressing critical health issues

Emphasis on Skills Development
The government emphasizes the importance of technical and vocational skills training, highlighting the need to empower young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the nation.
