The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D strongly condemned the tragic death of a WASSCE candidate in Ibadan, Oyo State. The student was hit by a stray bullet fired by police officers chasing a Hilux vehicle while he was on his way to his exam center in his father's car.
NANS President, Owolewa Taiwo, described the incident as a national disgrace and direct attack on Nigerian students. The association demanded immediate action from authorities, including 👇
👉 Immediate Actions Required:
Identification, Arrest, and Prosecution: The officer responsible for the heinous act must be immediately identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
👉 Suspension and Investigation: The entire unit involved in this operation should be suspended and investigated, given their alleged ties to the disbanded SARS unit.
👉 Public Apology and Compensation: The family of the deceased student deserves a public apology and adequate compensation.
👉 Overhaul of Rogue Police Elements: A thorough accountability process for rogue elements in the police force operating in Oyo State is necessary.
NANS also called on Governor Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, and the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly, emphasizing that protecting killers in uniform is unacceptable. They gave a 24-hour ultimatum for action, warning that failure to respond would lead to peaceful protests, mass mobilization, and legal action
The association prioritizes the lives, safety, and dignity of Nigerian students, firmly stating their stance against police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and silence that fuels oppression. They demand justice for the young comrade's life lost and insist it must be seen to be done.
