The 2025 Unified Tertiary Matrication Examination (UTME) has sparked controversy, with many candidates expressing dissatisfaction with the results. The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), was marred by technical glitches and incomplete questions, affecting over 379,997 candidates.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Oloyede, apologized for the issues and announced plans to have affected candidates retake the exam. However, stakeholders have called for more concrete measures to prevent similar issues in the future.

Some stakeholders, including education advocate Alex Onyia, have threatened to sue JAMB on behalf of over 8,000 affected students. Onyia argued that JAMB's system was inefficient, causing harm to students' mental health.

The controversy has sparked a national debate, with some blaming the government for neglecting the education sector, while others attribute the poor performance to students and parents. Dr. Michael Ogbemudia, a lecturer at Chrisland University, criticized the government's lack of investment in education, citing inadequate funding and poor infrastructure.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi echoed similar sentiments, attributing the high failure rate to years of neglect and underinvestment in education. In contrast, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa argued that the results reflect the government's success in curbing exam malpractice.

Experts have offered various perspectives on the issue. Dr. Chidiebere Nwachukwu, a senior lecturer at the University of Nigeria, attributed the poor performance to a combination of factors, including a lack of motivation among teachers and students' reliance on cheating. Dr. Ata-Awaji Anthony Reuben, acting HOD of Mass Communication at Topfaith University, blamed the government's failure to prioritize education and invest in quality teachers.

The controversy highlights the need for reforms and investments in Nigeria's education sector to ensure a more efficient and effective system.
