An Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti has sentenced two graduates, Ojo Babajide and Olajide Nathaniel, to 30 years imprisonment for kidnapping a student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti. The defendants, aged 31 and 35, were found guilty of conspiracy and kidnapping, and were sentenced to 10 years each for kidnapping and five years each for conspiracy.

The victim, a student and hair salon operator, was kidnapped on March 23, 2022, and was forced to pay for his lodging in a hotel room through mobile transfer. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N1m, but the victim's relatives were only able to raise N101,000. The victim was flogged with a horsewhip and sustained serious bruises before he was released.

The court heard that the defendants were fresh graduates preparing to go for their National Youth Service Corps programme when they committed the offences. The prosecutor, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, presented evidence, including the victim's and defendants' statements, while the defendants' lawyer pleaded for mercy.

Justice Adeniyi Familoni, in his judgment, stated that the incidents of kidnapping in the community were alarming and that the defendants deserved punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. The sentences are to run concurrently, effective from May 21, 2025.
