The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of bachelor's degree programmes in 15 approved Federal Colleges of Education. This development follows President Bola Tinubu's assent to the legislation empowering these colleges to award both Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and bachelor's degrees.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, stated that the dual certification model aims to revitalize teacher education and address dwindling enrollment. The model enhances access, improves quality, and modernizes teacher training.
The National Commission for Colleges of Education has confirmed the rollout, with admissions for the dual mode beginning in the 2025-2026 academic session. Students will be admitted for both NCE and bachelor's degree programmes.

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Prof Paulinus Okwelle, expressed confidence that the approach will boost enrolment and improve the quality of teacher training. He noted that proper pedagogical and content training will better equip teachers to manage modern classroom challenges.
The Director of Colleges of Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Uche Uba, confirmed that the 15 approved federal colleges are engaging with the National Universities Commission to ensure a smooth transition. A clear implementation guideline is in place to facilitate the process.
