The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has implemented a no-pay-no-work policy in response to the Federal Government's consistent delay in paying salaries of its members. According to ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union has been forced to take this measure due to the government's failure to meet its financial obligations.
Background to the Dispute 👇🏾
The dispute stems from the union's departure from the Integrated Payment and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), a platform that ASUU and other academic unions have repeatedly criticized. Since leaving IPPIS, lecturers' salaries have been delayed, with payments often made 10 days into a new month.
Impact on Members 👷♂️👷♂️
Piwuna expressed concern about the impact of delayed salaries on members, particularly in the current economic climate. "Our members can't celebrate Sallah properly without their salaries," he said. The union has resolved to invoke the no-pay-no-work policy, which means lecturers will boycott classes until their salaries are paid.
Support from Non-Academic Staff ⚕️
The National President of the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions, Mohammed Ibrahim, also condemned the government's actions. He noted that university workers are being treated like second-class citizens and that despite writing to the Accountant General of the Federation and relevant ministers, no explanation has been given for the delay.
