The Congress of University Academics CONUA has expressed concern that the Federal Government's policies on fuel subsidy removal and naira floating are only benefiting the political class, while the masses continue to suffer. In a statement signed by its president, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, to commemorate the country's 26th Democracy Day, the union noted that the policies have not improved the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

Policies Not Trickle-Down 😧

CONUA, a breakaway union from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stated that the expected benefits from the policies have not trickled down to the people, but rather channeled more resources to the political class. The union called on the Federal Government to find a workable solution to the economic crisis in the country.

Commendation and Condemnation ⚖️

While commending the Federal Government for releasing funds for the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) to deserving academic staff, CONUA condemned reports of selective payment based on union affiliation. The union urged the Minister of Education to investigate and stop such practices.

Demands for Academic Welfare 🤏

CONUA also demanded immediate redress for the exclusion of inter-university centers from the allowance disbursement and warned that the issue of academic remuneration remains unresolved. The union noted that salaries of Nigerian academics have remained stagnant for over 16 years, despite changing economic realities and spiraling inflation.

Call to Action 🤙

As the country celebrates Democracy Day, CONUA reminded the Federal Government that democracy is not just about voting and representation, but also about justice, fairness, and accountability. The union urged the government to take concrete actions to improve the lives of academics, who nurture the minds of future generations.
