The Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, is facing a lawsuit over the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Edoba Omoregie. The Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) has filed a pre-action notice, seeking a court order to compel the minister to conduct a fresh selection process for the VC position.

Allegations Against Omoregie 👇🏾

ALDRAP alleges that Omoregie's appointment was made in violation of extant laws and university regulations. The association claims that Omoregie overstayed his leave of absence from UNIBEN while serving at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) from 2014 to 2024, and collected double salaries and allowances from both institutions.

Court Action 👨‍⚖

ALDRAP has requested the scores of 25 candidates who participated in the selection process for the VC position in 2024. The association intends to file a lawsuit against the President, Minister of Education, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), seeking declarations that Omoregie's appointment is null and void.

Reliefs Sought 👇🏾

ALDRAP is seeking several declarations, including that Omoregie's appointment breaches the principles of merit, transparency, and fairness, and that he is ineligible for the position due to overstaying his leave of absence and collecting double salaries. The association also wants the court to order ICPC to investigate and prosecute Omoregie for alleged infractions.
