A staggering 80% of the 98,232 candidates eligible for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mop-up exam failed to appear, according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, attributed the low turnout to intensified security measures targeting impersonators and exam cheats.

Oloyede explained that the board had gathered intelligence from security agencies to apprehend impersonators. He noted that some CBT centers expecting 250 candidates per session recorded fewer than 20 attendees, which was anticipated due to the crackdown on exam malpractice syndicates.

The JAMB boss revealed that some individuals attempted to cheat by falsely declaring themselves as albinos to exploit facial recognition vulnerabilities. He stated that 1,787 candidates declared themselves as albinos, a significant increase from previous years. Oloyede emphasized that suspected impersonators who failed to take the exam would not escape accountability.

Oloyede hinted that parents found financing examination malpractice schemes for their children would soon face investigation and possible prosecution. He assured that the board would delay the release of mop-up exam results to allow for further scrutiny and removal of suspected fraudulent entries.

Regarding Direct Entry (DE) admissions, Oloyede revealed that 14 candidates had already been caught presenting forged certificates. He lamented the role of educational institutions in enabling the fraud, stating that some institutions were awarding NCE certificates to students who did not meet the requirements.
Oloyede emphasized that institutions involved in malpractice would face consequences, stating that "all of them will have to pay for it." He assured that the board would continue to crack down on exam malpractice and ensure that only deserving candidates are admitted into tertiary institutions.
