The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to reopen public primary schools in Abuja. The schools have been closed for over two months due to a dispute between the FCT Administration and Local Government Education Authorities.
NANS warned that failure to reopen the schools would lead to protests and a shutdown of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The student body accused the FCTA of denying children from low-income backgrounds access to basic education, describing the situation as "disheartening" and "unjust."
NANS revealed that it had sent several official letters to the minister seeking intervention and requesting an audience to resolve the crisis. However, the letters were ignored, and no meeting was granted, leaving NANS with no choice but to escalate the matter.
The student body warned that if the government fails to act within 7 working days, it would mobilize thousands of students and education rights activists for a peaceful but total shutdown of the FCDA. NANS emphasized that the right to basic education is non-negotiable and that any attempt to suppress it would be met with legitimate resistance.
