The National Universities Commission (NUC) has denied allegations that its accreditation exercise is a mere formality. In a statement, NUC Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Ribadu refuted claims that universities with inadequate staffing can receive full accreditation.

Accreditation Process 👇

Ribadu emphasized that NUC's accreditation process is a rigorous evaluation system designed to ensure universities uphold high academic standards. The process involves a peer review approach, engaging independent panels of subject experts to evaluate academic programs.

Stringent Evaluation Criteria👇

The NUC boss highlighted the stringent nature of the accreditation process, which evaluates individual programs based on seven sections, including academic matters, staffing, physical facilities, and library resources. To attain full accreditation, programs must score a minimum of 70% in each core area and an overall score of 70% or above.

Staffing Requirements 👇

Ribadu explained that staffing is a critical component of accreditation, with a focus on permanent staff adequacy. While part-time staff are permitted, their numbers are limited, and evaluators verify staff records and qualifications during physical accreditation visits.

Commitment to Quality Assurance 👇

The NUC remains committed to ensuring Nigerian universities produce competent graduates who can compete globally. Ribadu urged universities to establish internal quality assurance mechanisms and stakeholders to rely on verified information rather than baseless accusations.

Integrity and Credibility 👇

The Commission prioritizes integrity and credibility in its accreditation process, with a thorough internal review and ratification session to ensure adherence to guidelines. NUC is determined to maintain the highest standards of quality assurance in the Nigerian University System.
