The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, has revealed why the agency suspended its foreign scholarship programme for lecturers in public tertiary institutions. According to Echono, the programme was discontinued due to financial unsustainability, citing high foreign exchange rates and a growing number of beneficiaries who failed to return to Nigeria after completing their studies abroad.

Echono explained that the sharp drop in the value of the local currency resulted in a significant increase in the cost of training a single scholar abroad, with some cases reaching nearly N100 million. He also noted that many beneficiaries were not returning to Nigeria after completing their studies, which was a major concern for the agency.

The TETFund boss described the situation as a "double tragedy," where lecturers enjoyed full sponsorship abroad while their institutions in Nigeria continued paying them, expecting them to return. Echono emphasized that the agency was not stopping lecturers from seeking opportunities abroad, but rather, it was no longer sustainable to continue the programme under false pretences.

However, Echono clarified that the suspension is not absolute and that waivers are still granted in exceptional cases where the course of study is not available in any Nigerian university. He cited an example of a recent waiver granted to an aviation university for specific courses that are new and not available in the country.

Echono added that the Fund has decided to redirect resources to support local training of academic staff, which is more cost-effective and impactful. He stated that the agency has increased funding for academic staff training and is now training more people locally, with the potential to train between eight to ten local scholars for the same cost as sending one abroad.

The suspension of the foreign scholarship programme is part of TETFund's efforts to optimize its resources and ensure that its interventions are impactful and sustainable. By supporting local training and granting waivers in exceptional cases, the agency aims to achieve its goals of improving the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria.
