Clinical lecturers at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, have threatened to embark on a strike if the university's governing council does not reverse what they describe as discriminatory policies regarding the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. The lecturers, under the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, expressed concern over qualification criteria that seem to exclude clinical lecturers from the vice-chancellor position.

The lecturers claim that the requirements are designed to favor a specific section of the university community or a particular candidate. They point out that medical professors with fellowships have served as vice-chancellors in other universities, and argue that clinical lecturers should not be excluded from the role.
The lecturers have given the governing council a two-week ultimatum to address their concerns before the expiration of the six-week application window for the vice-chancellor position. They have warned that failure to comply may lead to industrial action.
The lecturers are urging the pro-chancellor to use his office to address the unjust policies and create a more inclusive process that reflects the diversity of the academic community.

The lecturers have cautioned that if their demands are not met, they may be forced to take industrial action, which could disrupt the university's operations. Meanwhile, clinical lecturers at the University of Calabar have already embarked on an indefinite strike over similar issues.
