The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has responded to a viral publication in the national dailies RE: RELEASE MY SON’S WAEC CERTIFICATE NOW, HE’S SLIPPING INTO DEPRESSION–MOTHER CRIES OUT,’” report of a mother claiming that her son's result was being withheld, causing him depression. The Council denied allegations of withholding results without due process, explaining that results are only withheld when there are formal reports of examination malpractice or irregularities.
According to WAEC, when such reports are received, candidates are officially informed of the allegations and provided with avenues for redress. The Council emphasized that it follows due process in all its activities, investigating reported cases of examination malpractice in accordance with established rules and regulations.
WAEC assured stakeholders that every malpractice allegation is handled fairly and legally, with candidates given opportunities to respond to allegations made against them. The Council also noted that information about the process for addressing malpractice allegations is publicly communicated through press releases, social media platforms, and examination materials.
Despite WAEC's clarification, some educationists and parents continue to call for more transparency and empathy in handling such sensitive issues involving teenagers. The mother who raised the alarm maintains that she has not received any official communication regarding her son's case, questioning why WAEC wouldn't contact her directly if there were issues.
WAEC remains committed to improving assessment standards in West Africa, affirming its dedication to adding value to the educational goals of its stakeholders. The Council will continue to work towards enhancing the quality of assessment for the benefit of quality education in Nigeria and beyond.
