The Coalition of Healthcare Professionals in Tertiary Education Institutions in Nigeria has petitioned the Federal Government over the alleged unfair dismissal of Dr. Ibikunle Olaniran, a medical doctor formerly with the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. The coalition claims that Olaniran's dismissal was "illegal and vindictive," and that it was a result of his advocacy for improved welfare for health workers and his withdrawal from the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
The coalition alleges that the university management's actions were motivated by a desire to victimize Olaniran, and that the charges brought against him were "unreasonable and oppressive." They claim that the real reason for his dismissal was his withdrawal from the union and his demands for a refund of his deducted dues.
The coalition has urged the Federal Government to intervene and reinstate Olaniran, warning that failure to do so could embolden other institutions to dismiss medical personnel under similar circumstances. They have also called for the payment of pending allowances owed to health workers and an end to victimization and unfair treatment of healthcare professionals.
The university's management has denied the allegations, stating that due process was followed in Olaniran's dismissal. They claim that Olaniran was given several opportunities to defend himself and that the decision to dismiss him was made after thorough deliberations.
