The recent 2026 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking has highlighted the concerning state of Nigeria's university system. Despite the crucial role universities play in manpower development and societal growth, none of Nigeria's 297 universities ranked within the top 1,000 globally for the third consecutive year. This outcome underscores the dire condition of tertiary education in the country.
The QS ranking evaluates universities based on eight performance indicators, including academic reputation, research output, and international collaboration. The top-performing universities are predominantly located in the US, Asia, and Europe. In contrast, Nigerian universities struggled to make an impact, with only three institutions featuring in the rankings. The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos ranked between 1,001–1,200, while Ahmadu Bello University fell within the 1,201–1,400 range.
The performance of Nigerian universities is particularly disheartening when compared to other African countries. South Africa and Egypt have made significant strides, with several universities ranking within the top 300. The University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, for instance, secured impressive rankings.
The poor showing of Nigerian universities can be attributed to several factors, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and a lack of innovation. The country's budgetary allocation to education is woefully insufficient, ranging from 5% to 7%. This has resulted in universities struggling to attract private sector funding and fulfill their mandate of teaching, research, and community service.
To improve the global standing of Nigerian universities, the government and university administrators must prioritize adequate funding, autonomy, and strategic planning. Rather than establishing new universities, the focus should be on elevating existing institutions to global standards. Stakeholders must work collaboratively to meet the requirements and key performance indicators that underpin global university rankings.
