The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has received presidential approval to address longstanding issues between the Federal Government and university lecturers nationwide. A key aspect of this plan is the clearance of overdue Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) owed to academic and non-academic staff in federal universities. The disbursement of funds has commenced, with an initial N50 billion payment made to universities, enabling lecturers to start receiving their allowances.
This development, after nearly 20 years of advocacy and unfulfilled promises, is being celebrated as a significant milestone in government-labour relations within Nigeria's tertiary education system. Prof. Yemi Oke, a respected academic from the University of Lagos, praised the Tinubu administration for fulfilling a promise that many thought would never be kept. He emphasized that the thoughtfulness and sincerity behind this action are what truly matter.
The Minister of Education had initially announced the Federal Government's intervention on April 23, 2025, highlighting the release of N50 billion to settle EAA arrears. He described this move as a testament to President Tinubu's commitment to the potential of Nigerian youths and the crucial role academic staff play in their development.
