The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the recently launched interest-free loan scheme by the Federal Government, describing it as a “poison chalice” that would further plunge its members into debt rather than address their welfare concerns.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday at the Union’s National Secretariat, University of Jos, the National President of ASUU, Professor Christopher Piwuna, stated that the scheme, which offers up to ₦10 million capped at 33.3 per cent of an applicant’s gross annual salary, is not in the best interest of academic staff.

He further advised members to shun the government’s loan offer and instead focus on pressing for their legitimate entitlements, warning that the initiative is a bait designed to distract from unresolved welfare and funding issues in the university system.

ASUU also reiterated its demand for the Federal Government to prioritize:

The renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement,

Sustainable funding for public universities, and

Revitalization of the university system.

The Union warned that failure by the Federal Government to address these longstanding issues could compel ASUU to embark on another strike action.

 “The general public should note that ASUU has written several letters to the Federal Government to resolve this crisis amicably, but regrettably, our appeals have fallen on deaf ears. As always, it is the Federal Government that consistently pushes our Union towards strike action. If the government fails to act, ASUU may have no option but to embark on industrial action to press home our demands,” Professor Piwuna added
