The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced that the Federal Government’s establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology is a strategic response to the pressing environmental challenges confronting Nigeria and the global community.

Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration of the governing council and principal officers of the new institution, Dr. Alausa highlighted that the university—located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Rivers State—is the nation’s first dedicated centre for environmental sciences. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the university’s creation in February 2025.

“This university is envisioned as a centre of excellence in environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technological research,” Dr. Alausa stated. “It will produce homegrown solutions that address both local needs and global aspirations. The choice of Koroma/Saakpenwa, a region central to Nigeria’s natural resource base, is both symbolic and intentional.”

The Minister emphasised that the institution’s creation goes beyond expanding Nigeria’s tertiary education system. Instead, it represents a deliberate move to foster research-driven solutions to environmental issues while contributing to national and global development imperatives.

Dr. Alausa charged members of the governing council to demonstrate visionary leadership, strategic oversight, and accountability, while upholding due process, meritocracy, and institutional autonomy. He urged them to provide guidance on key issues, including academic direction, budget discipline, and institutional development, while maintaining harmony among stakeholders.

Cautioning against political or parochial influence, the Minister stressed that the success of the new university would depend on the “strength of character and collective wisdom” of its leadership.

Addressing the Vice-Chancellor and principal officers, Dr. Alausa congratulated them on their pioneering roles, urging them to build with clarity of vision, pursue academic excellence, and adopt global best practices. He called for a focus on faculty development, student experience, strategic partnerships, and community engagement.

“You must work in synergy with your governing council, host community, and relevant agencies to create an environment of peace, productivity, and innovation,” he said. “Your success will not only define the trajectory of the university but will contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of the Niger Delta and the country as a whole.”
