The management of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi has announced the indefinite closure of the institution following an overnight armed robbery incident that left several students injured and sparked a protest at the school’s main entrance.
According to Hõlå INFO, armed assailants invaded the male students’ hostel in the early hours, stealing valuables and injuring multiple occupants. Nine students sustained varying degrees of injury, with some receiving treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi. One student, identified as Matta Musa, Class Representative of NDI Computer Science, suffered a head injury during the attack.
In the wake of the incident, aggrieved students staged a demonstration on the Bauchi–Dass road, blocking access to the institution’s main gate. The protest escalated when suspected hoodlums attempted to hijack it, leading to a blockade of the federal highway near the campus. Security operatives deployed to the scene used tear gas to disperse the crowd, prompting some students to retaliate with stones before being subdued.
Speaking to Hõlå INFO, Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Haruna Umar, condemned the attack, describing it as unprecedented in the polytechnic’s history. “This is students showing their grievances to management and authorities,” he said.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Rabiu Wadda, confirmed the closure decision, citing the need to safeguard lives and prevent further unrest.
Registrar of the Polytechnic, Kasimu Salihu, in an official statement, reiterated that the closure was necessitated by the volatile situation. “Unscrupulous elements invaded the hostel, carting away students’ belongings and injuring about two students. In response, students expressed their frustration, calling on management to act. To forestall further breakdown of law and order, the institution has been shut down indefinitely.”
The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi urges all students to vacate the campus premises immediately and assures the public that investigations into the incident are underway.
