The Federal Government has approved the establishment of nine new private universities across Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Wednesday during a media briefing at the State House following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

The newly approved institutions are:

- Tazkiyah University, Kaduna State  

- Leadership University, Abuja  

- Jimoh Babalola University, Kwara State  

- Bridget University, Mbaise, Imo State  

- Greenland University, Jigawa State  

- JEFAP University, Niger State  

- Azione Verde University, Imo State  

- Unique Open University, Lagos State  

- American Open University, Ogun State

Dr. Alausa revealed that the current administration inherited 551 pending applications for new tertiary institutions. After applying more stringent criteria, the number was reduced to 79 active cases, from which nine received final approval.

He noted that many of these universities had been awaiting accreditation for over six years, with their founders having already developed physical infrastructure and invested billions of naira.

Approval delays were largely due to inefficiencies within the NUC. We’ve now implemented reforms to fast-track the process, and today’s approvals reflect efforts to clear the backlog, Alausa stated.

He also announced a temporary moratorium on new applications for private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with only institutions that meet the revised operational standards eligible to apply.
