The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that a special screening exercise for exceptional candidates below the age of 16 who excelled in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be conducted from September 22 to 26, 2025.

The exercise will take place simultaneously in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri, under the supervision of a specially constituted Technical Committee tasked with assessing the readiness of these young scholars for higher education. A total of 599 candidates met the initial eligibility threshold, with Lagos hosting 397, Owerri 136, and Abuja 66.

Speaking on the development, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, emphasized that the initiative is designed to identify only the most exceptional and adequately prepared underage candidates, adding that similar talent-screening practices are in place in other countries. He revealed that out of 41,027 underage UTME candidates this year, more than 40,000 did not meet the criteria for shortlisting.

The comprehensive assessment will include subject-specific tests, a short oral interview, and, where necessary, verification of WAEC results prior to interviews.

Under JAMB’s guidelines, underage candidates must score at least 320 in UTME, 80% in post-UTME, and obtain a minimum of 80% in WAEC or NECO in one sitting to qualify for consideration. Of the 1.95 million UTME candidates in 2025, 599 scored above 300 but fell below the Ministry of Education’s 16-year minimum admission age.

Four universities — Air Force Institute of Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, University of Jos, and Osun State University — have declared that they will not admit underage candidates under any circumstances.
