The Management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic death of one of its students during a prohibited sign-out ceremony held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso.
In an official statement released by the University Registrar, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, the institution confirmed that the deceased, identified as Babalola Marvelous Olanrewaju, a 300-Level student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was fatally injured during the unauthorized event.
Mr. Balogun emphasized that the University had banned all sign-out activities since 2023 within the campus precincts, extending the restriction to hotels and event facilities in and around Ogbomoso. Notifications had been formally issued to these establishments prohibiting the hosting of such ceremonies for LAUTECH students.
“Despite the ban, preliminary investigations revealed that a group of students chose to hold a sign-out ceremony on the football pitch within the Wazo Ultramodern Market. The event took a tragic turn when a male student sustained gunshot injuries and later succumbed to them,” the Registrar stated.
Reports indicated that the student attempted to leave the venue on his motorcycle but collapsed shortly after. Upon receiving a distress call, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs alerted the Oyo State Police Command in Ogbomoso. Police personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene, where the student’s identity was confirmed through university records. The body was then transferred to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Morgue.
The University Management is working closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and has formally informed the student’s parents.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find strength during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
It should be recalled that LAUTECH initially prohibited sign-out ceremonies in 2021, citing concerns about indiscipline and inappropriate behavior associated with the practice.
