The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the passing of Mr. Ajibola Ibitayo, a Part-Two student of the Faculty of Dentistry, who reportedly took his own life.
In an official statement released today by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, it was confirmed that Mr. Ibitayo (Matriculation Number: DEN/2021/023) died by suicide after the release of examination results on Wednesday, which indicated that he would be required to repeat Part Two for a second consecutive academic session.
According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred at his parents’ residence in Ejigbo, Osun State. It was further gathered that the student, whose father is a medical doctor, allegedly administered a lethal injection to himself.
The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing it as a devastating blow to the University community. He called on parents, guardians, and students to recognise that setbacks—though painful—are a natural part of life’s journey and should never be seen as an end to one’s aspirations.
“Temporary challenges must be viewed as opportunities for growth, resilience, and redirection toward future success,” Professor Bamire stated.
On behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the entire University community. He prayed for God Almighty to grant all those affected the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
