The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

This was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, urging them to embrace the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience that have sustained the country since independence in 1960. He further encouraged citizens to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.

The Minister expressed confidence that, with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the nation will continue to advance in peace, progress, and development. He wished the public a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration.

This year’s celebration is themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” with activities already underway, including special prayers in mosques and churches across the country.

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made following allegations of disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly during protests related to the strike.
