The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has strongly condemned the university management’s decision to increase school fees by 100 to 120 percent for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement signed by SUG President Comrade Adio James, General Secretary Comrade Alao Ayorinde, and Public Relations Officer Comrade Abiola David, the union described the hike as “a brutal and calculated attack” on students’ right to education.

The SUG, under its “Better Days Cabinet,” issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the management to reverse the decision and convene an emergency meeting with student leaders. It warned that failure to comply would trigger mass resistance, including boycotts and lawful protests.

According to the statement, students are already struggling under harsh economic realities, poor hostel conditions, erratic power supply, and inadequate learning facilities. The union accused the management of introducing the new fees without transparency or consultation, calling the move oppressive and unacceptable.

“We will not stand idly by while our futures are auctioned off,” the union declared, urging all students to refuse payment of the revised fees. It added that while it was open to dialogue, management must not mistake this for weakness.

“Reverse this fee hike, or face the consequences of a united student body that will not be silenced or subdued,” the SUG warned.

Meanwhile, non-teaching staff unions at FUOYE—including SSANU, NAAT, and NASU—recently staged a protest against the Governing Council, accusing it of maladministration, financial recklessness, and abuse of power.

The unions faulted the approval of ₦128 million as leave allowance for the Vice-Chancellor and ₦900 million for the purchase of an off-campus building. They alleged that staff welfare and infrastructure were being neglected while council members embarked on foreign trips at the expense of the institution.
