The management of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, has announced the loss of valuables estimated at several millions of naira following a midnight fire that ravaged a section of the institution’s Directorate of Students’ Affairs building.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, destroyed key university property, including students’ academic and graduation gowns stored within the affected building.

Confirming the development, the university’s Deputy Registrar, Corporate Affairs Division, Dr. Wale Balogun, issued a statement on Wednesday detailing the extent of the damage and the measures being taken by the institution.

According to him, although the inferno gutted a significant part of the Students’ Affairs building, no injuries or casualties were recorded.

The statement read:
“A devastating fire incident occurred at the Directorate of Students’ Affairs building on Tuesday, 2nd September, 2025, resulting in significant damage to valuables worth millions of naira. The inferno, which occurred in the early hours of the fateful day, gutted a section of the Students’ Affairs building at the Main Campus of the university where valuables, including students’ academic and graduation gowns, were kept. Even though, regrettably, the entire graduation gowns were completely razed by the inferno, there were no injuries or casualties reported.”

Following the incident, the university promptly constituted an investigative panel chaired by a senior professor to uncover the cause of the fire and recommend preventive measures to enhance campus safety.

While the exact cause of the inferno remains unknown, concerns have been raised among students regarding the loss of graduation gowns, which are crucial for forthcoming convocation ceremonies. University officials assured that alternative arrangements would be considered to ensure the incident does not disrupt academic or ceremonial activities.
