The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities (COPSUN) has issued a urgent appeal to the Federal Government to take decisive steps to prevent another strike in Nigeria's university system. This call follows the ongoing dispute between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a communiqué signed by Prof. Ayodeji Omole, acting chairman of COPSUN, and issued at the end of the body's 69th meeting in Abuja, the pro-chancellors expressed concern that Nigerian universities are not in a position to withstand a fresh round of industrial action. "The nation cannot afford another round of industrial action in the university system as the universities are yet to fully recover from the disruptions of the last crisis," the statement read.

ASUU has been pressing for implementation of the renegotiated 2009 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, seeking improvements in areas like salaries, conditions of service, university funding, autonomy, and review of laws governing the National Universities Commission (NUC).

To avert further conflict, COPSUN made the following recommendations to the government:

- Increase Education Budget: Governments should annually review and increase budgetary allocations to education to strengthen universities.

- COPSUN Involvement: Include COPSUN representatives in negotiations and dispute resolution processes involving university unions for smoother and more effective outcomes.

- Governing Council Operations: University governing councils should operate strictly within university laws to minimize friction with vice-chancellors and other key officers.

In a related note, COPSUN commended the Federal Government for imposing a moratorium on the proliferation of universities, saying this move would help bolster existing institutions.
