The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced that about 5,000 students of the institution will not be allowed to participate in the ongoing second semester examination due to failure to pay their school fees.
In a memo signed by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, on Monday, the university disclosed that the affected students had failed to pay their charges despite repeated reminders and had also not taken advantage of the financial support provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
NELFUND, established under the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Act, 2024, and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on April 3, 2024, was created to provide financial assistance for tuition, fees, and upkeep to qualified Nigerian students in approved tertiary institutions and vocational centres across the country.
According to the memo, the Senate of the University directed that all students who defaulted in the payment of their school fees be barred from writing the examinations, which commenced on Monday, September 29, 2025.
The statement read in part:
“With the second semester examination set to begin on Monday, 29th September, 2025, these (defaulting) students shall be barred from writing the examination if they fail to pay their school charges or subscribe to the student loan by NELFUND. About 5,000 students have been identified in this category of defaulters. In compliance with the directive of the Senate of the University of Benin, these students shall not be allowed to write the forthcoming examination.”
The Registrar further stated that Provosts, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments have been mandated to strictly enforce the directive, while the list of defaulting students in their respective units must be published no later than 8:00 a.m. on Monday.
To ensure compliance, the management has also appointed an enforcement task force headed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) to monitor the process.
The university emphasized that the decision was in line with its commitment to upholding standards and ensuring financial responsibility among students.
