Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, has granted amnesty to 24 students who were previously expelled for various misconducts, giving them a second chance to complete their academic programmes.
According to Prof. Jeremiah Ojerinde, Vice Chancellor of the university, the amnesty programme was initiated as part of the institution's welfare-oriented approach to issues and challenges facing students and staff.
Speaking at the sidelines of the institution's 17th convocation and 20th anniversary celebration, Prof. Ojerinde stated that the amnesty was granted with strict conditions, emphasizing that the affected students must obey the university's rules.
"We asked what we can do to alleviate the suffering of the affected students, and we said that if you are expelled in your final year, you can come back, but with the caveat that you must obey our rules," Prof. Ojerinde said.
The Vice Chancellor commended the promoter of the university, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, for enduring 17 uninterrupted convocations and 20 years of establishment as the first private university of technology in the country.
Prof. Ojerinde also expressed his aspirations for the university, stating that he anticipates Bells to acquire patents for designing and owning things, and that the institution has started doing things that can be mass produced as entrepreneurs.
