Barring any last-minute intervention, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will, on Monday, October 13, 2025, commence a two-week nationwide warning strike to press home its long-standing demands from the Federal Government.
This was disclosed in a memo tagged “Strike Bulletin One” issued to all ASUU branches and made available to journalists on Monday in Abuja.
According to the memo signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the planned industrial action follows the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued by the union, demanding that the Federal Government address unresolved issues, including the signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
Prof. Piwuna lamented that despite repeated calls and the expiration of the ultimatum, the government has failed to provide any meaningful response.
“It was further resolved that the union will embark on a two-week warning strike if the government fails to take acceptable and satisfactory steps to address the lingering issues.”
Piwuna stated that the resolutions were communicated to the Ministers of Labour and Education, as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), adding that no meaningful progress has been recorded since then.
He commended members for their patience and resilience throughout the prolonged negotiation process, which he described as “tortuous” and spanning over eight years.
The ASUU President urged members to remain united and mobilise fully for the impending action, noting that unity of purpose is crucial to achieving the union’s objectives.
Members were directed to take instructions strictly from their branch chairpersons and maintain communication through official union channels.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, said updates on the government’s response would be provided “when available.”
The decision to proceed with the warning strike was reached at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, ASUU listed several unresolved issues, including:
👉The renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
👉Sustainable funding for university revitalisation.
👉The payment of outstanding 25–35 per cent salary arrears.
👉Resolution of promotion arrears and third-party deduction issues.
👉Addressing the victimisation of lecturers in some federal universities.
The communiqué stressed that the Federal Government has the capacity to avert the looming industrial action by taking concrete steps to address the union’s demands.
In a related development, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over the non-implementation of key resolutions reached with the union.
In a communiqué signed by its National President, Ibeji Nwokoma, and issued after its NEC meeting held on October 4, 2025, at the Federal University, Lafia, NAAT expressed disappointment over the Ministry of Education’s failure to convene meetings to address lingering issues affecting its members.
The issues include the non-completion of the FGN/NAAT 2009 Agreement renegotiation, non-mainstreaming of earned allowances, delayed payment of salaries, and the non-release of the circular for CONTISS 14 and 15, which would allow members to attain the peak of their careers.
The communiqué warned that failure of the government to act within the stipulated 14 days would leave the union with no option but to declare an industrial action.
Both ASUU and NAAT reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue but stressed that only concrete government action not promises would avert the looming disruptions in Nigeria’s public universities.
