The Church of England has announced the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally as the new Archbishop of Canterbury, making her the first woman in history to lead both the Church of England and the global Anglican Communion.

Her nomination, made by the Crown Nominations Commission following the retirement of Most Rev. Justin Welby, received formal approval from His Majesty King Charles III, the UK Government confirmed on Friday.

At 63, Archbishop-designate Mullally becomes the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding a lineage that dates back to the late sixth century. A former nurse and Bishop of London, Mullally brings a wealth of pastoral and administrative experience to the historic office.

In a statement following her appointment, Dame Sarah Mullally expressed humility and faith in taking up the new role, Reacting to the appointment, Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated Mullally, describing the Church of England as “of profound importance to this country.” He added:

Archbishop Justin Welby stepped down earlier this year following an inquiry that found the Church mishandled reports of abuse dating back to the 1970s.

The Church of England, founded in the 16th century and tracing its spiritual heritage to early Christianity in Britain, remains the mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, representing millions of worshippers across more than 165 countries.
