The Federal Government has reconstituted and inaugurated the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed Federal Government Tertiary Institutions Expanded Negotiation Committee to fast-track ongoing discussions with academic and non-academic unions across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The inauguration, presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, marks a renewed effort by the Tinubu Administration to foster sustainable industrial harmony within the nation’s tertiary education system.
According to a statement signed by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, the committee’s formation comes amid intensified engagement efforts aimed at addressing long-standing issues with unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which recently issued a two-week strike notice.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, Dr. Alausa explained that the expanded negotiation committee was established to harmonise all existing negotiation processes under one inclusive and coordinated framework.

He disclosed that the committee has been provided with a functional and fully equipped secretariat to support its mandate effectively, adding that its inaugural meeting would hold later on Tuesday, 7 October.
Dr. Alausa also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s full political backing for the process, stressing that the President has directed that all negotiations be concluded swiftly, fairly, and in the spirit of mutual respect.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmed, joined Dr. Alausa at the inauguration.
In his remarks, the Minister of Labour commended the Ministry of Education’s inclusive approach, noting that lasting peace in the sector can only be achieved through dialogue and the active participation of all stakeholders.
Chairman of the committee and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to approach the assignment with openness, inclusiveness, and integrity.

Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to restoring stability and trust in the tertiary education system, the Federal Government reiterated that inclusive dialogue, fair negotiation, and decisive leadership remain central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu — where every student stays in school, every teacher is valued, and every institution thrives in peace and progress.
