The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the appointment of National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.
This transition follows the formal handover of duties by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who proceeds on terminal leave after ten years of meritorious service as Chairman of the Commission.
The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Tuesday at INEC Headquarters, Abuja.
In his remarks, Professor Yakubu explained that the decision was made in compliance with Section 306, Subsections 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In the interim, I am handing over to one of the most senior National Commissioners by date of appointment. Following consultation with other National Commissioners, May Agbamuche-Mbu will serve in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman of the Commission.”
He added that the transition would ensure continuity in the Commission’s operations while giving the appointing authorities sufficient time to name a substantive Chairman.
Reflecting on his tenure, Professor Yakubu expressed gratitude to colleagues, stakeholders, civil society organisations, development partners, and Nigerians for their support, encouragement, and constructive criticism throughout his service.
He specifically commended members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for their dedication, describing them as “among the most educated, patriotic, and knowledgeable election officials I have worked with.”
As part of his farewell, Professor Yakubu presented two major publications chronicling the Commission’s work under his leadership:
Election Management in Nigeria 2015–2025
Innovations in Electoral Technology 2015–2025
He also outlined INEC’s ongoing preparations for upcoming elections, including:
The Anambra State Governorship Election in November 2025
The FCT Area Council Election in February 2026
The Ekiti State Governorship Election in June 2026
The Osun State Governorship Election in August 2026
Yakubu confirmed that preparations for the 2027 General Elections are already underway, alongside efforts to clean up the national voters’ register, review polling unit allocations, and strengthen the management of party primaries.
Professor Yakubu, who served as Executive Secretary of the Education Trust Fund before joining INEC, was first appointed as Chairman on October 21, 2015, by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He assumed office on November 9, 2015, and was reappointed for a second term in 2020 — the first in Nigeria’s democratic history.
As he handed over officially to Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, Yakubu prayed for continued progress in Nigeria’s democracy.
