The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has screened a total of 176 exceptional underage candidates who excelled in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), as discussions intensify at the National Assembly on reviewing the existing admission age policy.
The screening exercise, conducted simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos, and Owerri, was designed to evaluate the readiness, competence, and intellectual maturity of candidates below 16 years seeking admission into tertiary institutions for the 2025/2026 academic session. The process involved a written test followed by an oral interview, assessing both academic performance and personal development.
Speaking during the exercise in Abuja, Chairman of the Centre, Professor Taoheed Adedoja, commended the smooth conduct of the exercise and expressed satisfaction with the outstanding performance of the candidates. He explained that the assessment comprised multiple stages, including written and face-to-face evaluations, to ensure a holistic appraisal of the participants.
A total of 22 candidates were screened at the Abuja Centre, while 176 candidates participated nationwide.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Mohammed Muntari Dandutse, who monitored the exercise, applauded JAMB for creating a credible platform that encourages young academic talents. He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s education reform initiatives, noting that such programmes align with the country’s broader development agenda.
Similarly, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, Hon. Oboku Oforji, hailed the exceptional performance of the young candidates, describing them as symbols of Nigeria’s growing academic competitiveness within Africa.
Hon. Oforji also disclosed that the House Committee is considering a review of the admission age policy to accommodate gifted underage students, while reiterating the legislature’s commitment to supporting JAMB and other examination bodies in delivering on their mandates.
According to officials, the screening exercise underscores JAMB’s commitment to promoting merit, excellence, and inclusivity, ensuring that all candidates—irrespective of age—are provided with equal opportunities to demonstrate their intellectual capacity and readiness for higher education.
