The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced a total ban on all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students within its campuses.
The decision, contained in a circular signed by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, followed a management meeting held on Monday where the earlier resolution of the University Senate prohibiting such activities was reaffirmed.
According to the circular, the university warned that any student found engaging in sign-out celebrations will face severe disciplinary sanctions, including rustication, expulsion, or withdrawal of certificate.
The management further emphasized that indiscriminate parading around campus in any brand of vehicle will not be permitted. It added that unauthorised vehicles will be denied entry into the campuses throughout the last week of the second semester examinations.
Additionally, the circular prohibited large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations. It also directed that photographers are not permitted to mount photo stands or galleries for the purpose of sign-out celebrations.
Parents and guardians of final-year students were equally advised to refrain from visiting the campus premises during the final days of examinations, particularly on the last day.
Mr. Bobola reiterated that the university’s decision aims to maintain order, discipline, and academic decorum within the university environment.
The University of Benin thus joins other tertiary institutions — including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Federal University, Lafia, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Kaduna Polytechnic, and the University of Port Harcourt — which have recently prohibited sign-out celebrations on their campuses.
Sign-out celebrations are informal activities among final-year students, often involving the signing of white shirts and social gatherings to mark the end of their academic journey.
