President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized the need for Nigerian universities to produce Nobel laureates, saying the country's higher education sector must drive global innovation and academic excellence.
The President made this call at the 40th convocation ceremony of the University of Ilorin on Thursday, where he was represented by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Temidayo Oladiji.
President Tinubu stated that his administration has repeatedly warned against the proliferation of tertiary institutions, noting that government has suspended the establishment of new federal universities to channel resources into strengthening existing ones.
"We are prioritising quality over quantity. Adequate resources will be channelled to existing institutions to enhance their capacity and impact," he said.
The President commended the University of Ilorin's achievements in research, innovation, and discipline, saying the institution has continued to position itself as a model in the nation's academic system.
He urged scholars to intensify efforts that align with the federal government's broader development agenda, adding that "Nigeria must produce Nobel laureates, and we believe this University can lead that charge."
President Tinubu reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustaining research funding through TETFund and announced that the University of Ilorin has been selected as one of the host institutions for the National Universities Commission's Digital Innovation Hubs.
The initiative is designed to promote digital skills, entrepreneurship, and breakthrough research. The University of Ilorin is also one of the 18 universities benefiting from the ₦110 billion intervention aimed at expanding medical education infrastructure to address the shortage of healthcare professionals.
The President also noted that the federal government has taken steps to ensure uninterrupted academic calendars across universities, including the payment of earned allowances and a portion of withheld salaries of academic and non-academic staff.
He called on alumni, stakeholders, and the private sector to support education funding, saying the responsibility of building a knowledge-driven nation must be shared by all.
