The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin, on Monday, held its 7th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony, during which 32 new veterinary doctors were formally admitted into the veterinary profession.
Delivering the keynote address at the event, a former Vice-President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Dr. Bala Mohammed, emphasized the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing modern health challenges.
“Solutions to today’s greatest health challenges cannot be designed in isolation—they demand cooperation across veterinary medicine, human medicine, environmental sciences, and public policy,” he stated.
Dr. Mohammed, a seasoned veterinary surgeon, highlighted the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, stressing that they form the foundation of the One Health approach—a global strategy that promotes collaboration across disciplines to achieve optimal health outcomes.
He lamented that despite notable achievements, veterinary services in many countries, including Nigeria, remain underfunded and under-integrated into national health frameworks. According to him, weaknesses such as surveillance blind spots, limited laboratory capacity, and fragmented governance continue to hinder effective disease control.
“These gaps allow diseases to simmer unnoticed until they explode into public crises with devastating health and economic consequences,” he said.
Dr. Mohammed therefore called for increased investment in veterinary infrastructure, laboratory systems, education, and data-driven prevention strategies. He urged that veterinarians be recognized not only as responders but also as “guardians of planetary health.”
In his address, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Saliu Ameen, described the induction as a defining milestone in the lives of the new doctors.
“This ceremony is not merely a ritual; it is a defining moment,” he noted. “It signifies the transition of our graduands from students of veterinary medicine to full members of a noble and globally relevant profession.”
The event was attended by dignitaries, academics, families, and friends of the inductees who gathered to celebrate the newest addition to Nigeria’s community of veterinary professionals.
