More than a thousand students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Calabar, staged a peaceful protest within the campus to draw attention to the institution's failure to secure accreditation for their program by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN).

The students alleged that years of neglect, underfunding, and poor infrastructure have jeopardized their academic future, citing the university's failure to secure proper resource verification from the NUC before admitting students in 2016. Despite efforts to rectify the situation, the program remains unaccredited due to inadequate staffing, poor facilities, and unequipped laboratories.

The students expressed frustration and disappointment with the university's management, accusing them of mismanaging funds meant for the construction and furnishing of the faculty building. They appealed to the federal and state governments, as well as the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, to urgently intervene to prevent the collapse of the program and protect their academic future.

The students' representatives, Ndifreke Okowo and Iris Johnson, lamented that the situation has been ongoing for years, with repeated assurances from the university management failing to translate into concrete action. They fear that if the situation is not addressed, they may not be able to graduate as licensed pharmacists.

The university's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Effiong Eyo, stated that he was not aware of the situation and promised to look into the matter.

The students' protest highlights the need for urgent attention to the challenges facing the Faculty of Pharmacy and underscores the importance of ensuring that academic programs meet the necessary standards to produce competent professionals.
