The University of Jos community has been thrown into mourning following the alleged murder of a 300-level student of Banking and Finance, Mr. Peter Mafuyai, by his friend and fellow student.
According to team Hølå INFO, the suspect, identified as Mr. Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of Agriculture, reportedly attacked Mafuyai with a machete at his off-campus residence on Friday. He was alleged to have buried the victim’s body in a shallow grave behind the house shortly after the attack.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that both students were close friends who spent much time together. On the day of the incident, they were said to have returned from a football outing and also visited a music studio earlier for a recording session.
Upon arriving home, the suspect reportedly picked up a machete without offering a clear explanation when questioned by other occupants of the compound.
Moments later, he allegedly struck Mafuyai, prompting the occupants to flee in search of help. Upon their return, the victim’s body had reportedly been buried.
While the motive for the killing remains unclear, some sources suggest it may be linked to the duo’s music project. The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has limited access to information on the case, as many students are currently off campus.
Security operatives have since launched an investigation into the matter and invited close associates of both students for questioning.
The tragic development comes just days before the University of Jos is set to host the 2025 Nigerian University Games (NUGA).
Stakeholders have expressed concerns that the incident could heighten existing security fears and affect participation in the forthcoming event.
When contacted, the Acting Head of Information at the University, Mrs. Tongdyen Dachung, stated that official confirmation would be made after verifying the incident.
The President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Miss Jane Pwajok, confirmed that the police are handling the case while the union continues to gather accurate information. She cautioned students against spreading unverified details that could affect preparations for the NUGA Games, which the university community eagerly anticipates.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, for comments were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.
