The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike. This decision was made known by the National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Prof. Piwuna, the decision to suspend the strike stemmed from the meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held overnight and concluded by 4:00 am on Wednesday. The NEC meeting reviewed the progress of negotiations with the government and considered the efforts of students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in resolving the crisis.

ASUU declared a total and comprehensive warning strike starting from Monday, October 13, due to the failure of the government to meet its demands on time. The union is currently demanding the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, the release of withheld salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, and cessation of victimization of lecturers, among other demands.

The decision to review the strike action was a result of efforts by students, parents, and the NLC. ASUU has appreciated the efforts of well-meaning Nigerians and has resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate these efforts.

ASUU has not ruled out the possibility of resuming the strike if the government fails to meet its demands. The union remains committed to negotiating with the government to resolve the outstanding issues affecting public universities in Nigeria.
